Unique support project for spouses and partners of serving personnel and veterans is already having a positive impact

June, this year saw the launch of a new free Spouse Employment Support project called TRUEview, which has been specifically designed to support both spouses and partners of serving personnel and veterans regardless of their employment status.

The unique project was created in-line with extensive research carried out with Spouses’ and partners in 2016 and is providing tailored and flexible support to spouses/partners across the North East.

Primarily being delivered at Catterick Garrison and Dishforth the team are delivering a range of industry related training programmes which work around school hours and can include childcare. 1:2:1 flexible careers coaching has also seen the team working on evenings and on occasion weekends to accommodate individuals’ family commitments.

So far, the project, which will run until the end of January 2018, has supported over 60 individuals and has received positive feedback from the spouses and partners who it has supported.

One such beneficiary is Jayne who joined the programme last month –
“After living in Richmond, North Yorkshire for some years to be closer to my husband who was based at Catterick I’d worked hard to establish myself as a teacher and was devastated to be made redundant in the middle of last year.

I found it difficult to find suitable employment, being away from family and struggling to make ends meet was really starting to take its toll. As a result I also began really doubting my own abilities and was keen to make the move back down the country to be closer to family.

I’d heard about the TRUEview Spouse Employment Project delivered by North East charity Finchale from a friend at the Army Families Federation and was quickly put in touch with Barbara a partner on the project who specialises in Careers advice.

With her support I completely re-wrote my CV and felt comfortable again writing application forms. I had a few doubts along the way especially when I was offered my first interview with a College local to my family, but a quick phone call to Barbara and I instantly felt reassured.

I have now found employment as a full time lecturer in Health and Social Care and realised that I needed to believe in myself before I could convince employers. Without the support I’m not sure where I’d be. Thanks for the encouragement!”

Funded by a grant from the Ministry of Defence Armed Forces Covenant Grants Fund and delivered in association with A&M consultancy Ltd (specialists in employment and career focussed programmes) the projects flexible hours and delivery have made a real difference to individual participants enabling them to receive support when and how they need it around family commitments.
